My research explores the ways Iranian art fits into the current context of contemporary art. My M.A. thesis is titled "Strategies of Appropriation: A Place of History in Contemporary Iranian Art. In the last few decades, things have changed and there is no longer a clear divide between western aesthetics and the Iranian culture. This unleashes opportunities for artists that have been marginalized in the past. The new kaleidoscopic perception of the world offers Iranian artists tremendous expressive potential. I aim to explore the prominent ways artists are doing so, which include: incorporating iconography from ancient Persia to the Qajar and Pahlavi periods in order to preserve its historic culture, appropriating iconic western art to compare social and gender-biased politics, and provoking emotion through Shock Art that has never been known previously in Iran.
